Workshops & Master Classes
OPC invites musicians of international renown to engage our students and enrich our community. Past residencies have included: Afro-Peruvian musician and National Treasure- Juan Medrano Cotito; Rhiannon Giddens, co-founder of the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops; Ronnie Daliyo, Zimbabwean master musician and dancer; Airto Moreia-Brazilian percussionist and first DownBeat magazine Latino Percussionist of the Year, Steve Turre- Julliard School of Music Professor of Jazz Trombone; Count Basie Orchestra Rhythm Section; John Santos, percussionist & historian; Branice McKenzie, vocalist formerly with Harry Belafonte.

Preparatory Studies in Music (ages 8-17)
This is an after-school and Saturday program for youth that exposes youth to specific instruments and performance. The program offers group & private lessons, special workshops, master classes, and performance opportunities. Instruments are provided as needed and available. Classes include: Beginning Performance Ensembles, Composition, Musicianship, Theory & Harmony, History, Strings, Piano, Percussion, Zimbabwean Marimbas, Guitar, Electric Bass, Banjo and a variety of electives.

Black Girls Play (BGP)

Black Girls Play (BGP) is a holistic program combining music education, mentoring, entrepreneurship and leadership development for aspiring Black Girl musicians. Girls not only become proficient on an instrument, they also learn about the various professions in the ecosystem within a musician thrives. Girls participate in a variety of Business of Music and Technology classes that introduce the girls to the varied occupational choices in the field of music.

This program introduces children to music. They are exposed to a variety of instruments and develop their appreciation of different musical styles and genres. The program meets the students where they are, regardless of their musical ability.

Fredrick Douglas Youth Ensemble (FDYE)

The pre-professional program, serves up to 20 intermediate and advanced music students, ages 12- 20 years old. Youth in this program are selected through audition, and are pursuing music as a part their middle/high school, college and professional careers.

OPC/SFJAZZ Academy

This collaboration with SFJAZZ Education provides access to comprehensive jazz education and mentoring for young, aspiring musicians of color in Oakland. The curriculum provides the essential, rigorous training needed to cultivate proficiency and excellence in Jazz. It is free to middle-school students with a minimum of one year of music instruction.

Summer Music Academy

The Summer Music Academy offers three 2-weeks sessions, Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm. The multidisciplinary curriculum offers vocal and instrumental classes, as well as movement, dance, Tai Chi, yoga, visual art, ensembles and weekly field trips.

Teen Music Mentors

After two full years in the Prep Program, teens have the ability to become Teen Music Mentors to their peers and younger students. A variety of service positions are available, including: music, academic and social mentors, arts administration assistants, general administrative support, afterschool program assistants. Teen Music Mentors receive a stipend while serving in the program.
